Washington State University

The Washington State University Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine has been honored with the 2024 Health Professions Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine. This prestigious national recognition highlights the college’s outstanding commitment to diversity and inclusion in health education.

The award acknowledges various initiatives implemented by the college, including pathway programs supporting American Indian and Alaska Native students, the Health Equity Racial Organizing (HERO) Initiative, and the Health Equity Circle. These programs aim to increase representation of underrepresented groups in healthcare and address racial disparities in health outcomes.

A key factor in the college’s success is its holistic admissions process, which considers not only academic achievements but also personal attributes and experiences demonstrating applicants’ commitment to serving Washington’s rural communities, Tribal Nations, and marginalized populations. This approach has resulted in a diverse student body that exceeds national averages in several categories, including military service, first-generation college graduates, and women.

David Garcia, associate dean for community, health equity, and belonging, emphasized that the award affirms the college’s collective efforts to improve diversity, equity, and belonging in educational programs and promote health equity across the state.

The college’s five-year strategic plan includes expanding initiatives to foster excellence and diversity in academic programs. Collaboration with community partners is also planned to advocate for and build a better healthcare ecosystem that reduces health inequities.

By focusing on diversity and inclusion, the WSU Elson S. Floyd College of Medicine is working towards its vision of a healthier, more equitable Washington for all residents.
