Crystal Cené leads plans for justice, equity, diversity, inclusion initiatives in UC San Diego Health system

Dr. Crystal Cené has been named the chief administrative officer for health justice, equity, diversity and inclusion at UC San Diego Health. She will also serve as the associate chief medical officer for health equity, focusing on creating an inclusive environment for all stakeholders.
 
In her dual role, Dr. Cené will lead strategic planning for justice, equity, diversity, and inclusion initiatives across the health system. Her extensive background includes leadership at the University of North Carolina Health, where she directed health equity programs and implemented strategies to reduce COVID-19 vaccine disparities.
 
A nationally recognized health services researcher, Dr. Cené has authored over 70 peer-reviewed publications and mentored numerous students and faculty. Her research centers on enhancing patient and family-centered care, with a focus on racial and socioeconomic disparities.
 
Dr. Cené brings a wealth of clinical experience as a practicing general internal medicine physician. She completed her medical residency at Yale University, earned her medical degree from East Carolina University, and holds a Master in Public Health from Johns Hopkins University.
 
With her appointment, UC San Diego Health aims to strengthen its commitment to equitable healthcare and inclusive practices throughout the organization.
