Black Breastfeeding Week

Black Breastfeeding Week, an annual observance created in 2014 by a collective of Black leaders in the breastfeeding field, is set to launch its 2024 initiative from August 25-31. This year’s theme, “Reclaiming Our Narrative and Centering our Stories for Breastfeeding Justice,” aims to address the persistent health disparities in breastfeeding rates among Black mothers in the United States.

The initiative, now in its tenth year, was developed in response to several critical issues: the high Black infant mortality rate, the lack of diversity in the lactation field, and unique cultural barriers faced by Black women. By focusing on these areas, Black Breastfeeding Week seeks to improve breastfeeding outcomes and overall health for Black mothers and infants.

This year’s campaign will celebrate breastfeeding mothers in all their diversity throughout their breastfeeding journeys. It will also showcase ways in which families, societies, communities, and health workers can support every breastfeeding mother. The initiative includes virtual events and educational resources designed to empower Black mothers and their support systems.

Black Breastfeeding Week’s efforts align with broader global health initiatives, such as the World Health Organization and UNICEF’s call for equal access to breastfeeding support. By focusing specifically on the Black community, this initiative aims to close the gap in breastfeeding rates and support, ultimately contributing to better health outcomes for Black infants and mothers.

Through education, community support, and advocacy, Black Breastfeeding Week continues to play a crucial role in addressing racial health disparities and promoting breastfeeding as a vital component of infant and maternal health in the Black community.
