Aswita Tan-McGrory

Aswita Tan-McGrory serves as Director of the Disparities Solutions Center at Massachusetts General Hospital, one of the nation’s first hospital-based centers dedicated to eliminating racial and ethnic health care disparities. With over 20 years of experience in public health, she has transformed how health care organizations across America address inequitable care for minority populations, immigrants, and people with limited English proficiency.

As a former undocumented immigrant who arrived in the United States without English as her first language, Tan-McGrory brings deeply personal understanding to her work. She leads the nationally recognized Health Equity Leadership Program, a year-long executive education initiative that has trained leaders from more than 200 hospitals, health plans, and health centers since 2007. The program equips participants with evidence-based strategies for collecting demographic data, monitoring disparities in real time, and implementing organizational change to deliver equitable care.

Tan-McGrory co-leads Harvard’s online course “Reducing Racial Disparities in Health Care” and serves on influential national bodies including the Leapfrog Advisory Group on Equity and the National Academy of Medicine’s Discussion Group on Collecting Data to Ensure Equity in Payment Policy. She advises organizations on how race, ethnicity, and language impact care quality, helping translate research into actionable solutions. Her work has been particularly vital during COVID-19 and following George Floyd’s murder, periods when structural racism’s impact on health became impossible to ignore. Through her leadership, countless health systems have moved from understanding disparities to actively dismantling them.
