University of Utah Health

The University of Utah Health is spearheading an initiative to bridge health care gaps in Native American and rural communities. This effort was highlighted during a panel discussion featuring Jenna Murray, an Eastern Shoshone MD-PhD student, and NIH Director Monica Bertagnolli.

The discussion, which followed a public screening of the documentary “Winding Path,” focused on the unique challenges faced by these communities and the importance of mentorship and meaningful connections.

Bertagnolli, who has a deep understanding of rural health issues from her upbringing in Wyoming, emphasized the need for local solutions. “No one in Washington is going to figure out how to solve the problems of rural America. It’s got to be the people of rural America… It has to be us,” she stated. This sentiment was echoed by Pierre Carricaburu, a physician who highlighted the disparity in funding between the Veterans Administration and the Indian Health Service.

The University of Utah’s Native American Research Internship (NARI) program is a key component of this initiative, aiming to improve health access by fostering connections within affected communities. The program underscores the critical role of health care professionals who come from these communities in addressing disparities.
