Froedtert Hospital nurses and Froedtert & the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) dermatologists have launched a new outreach screening program to address health disparities in dermatology. This initiative focuses on skin, hair, and nail conditions more prevalent in diverse communities, aiming to improve access to dermatology screenings for racial and ethnic minorities.
The program, known as the Skin, Hair and Nails screening initiative, hosted four events in partnership with Casa Guadalupe, Gee’s Clippers Barbershop and Beauty Salon, and Neighborhood House of Milwaukee. Nearly 170 individuals participated, with 95% identifying as African American, Asian, or Hispanic.
Many participants reported never having seen a dermatologist before or being unable to access dermatology services due to lack of health insurance. The program identified five cases highly suspicious for skin cancer and referred more than a third of participants for further medical evaluation. Registered nurses also assisted community members with navigating the health system and coordinating ongoing care.
The initiative highlights the importance of community partnerships and targeted screening efforts to achieve health equity. Plans are underway to expand the Skin, Hair and Nails screening initiative to more communities, reinforcing Froedtert & MCW’s commitment to addressing health disparities in the diverse populations they serve.
