Nonprofit Common Threads

Common Threads, a national nonprofit dedicated to nutrition education and healthy cooking, is addressing health disparities in minority groups through a $400,000 multi-year grant from the Florida Blue Foundation. The organization is expanding its evidence-based programs in Miami’s Allapattah neighborhood, focusing on empowering families with essential cooking skills, kitchen safety knowledge, nutrition education, and access to affordable, healthy foods.

The grant, spanning from October 2024 to September 2028, will enable Common Threads to deliver cooking and nutrition education to over 2,600 youth and adults. By collaborating with the Village of Allapattah YMCA, they aim to provide impactful programs for La Bodega Food Pantry patrons and the entire Allapattah community. This initiative addresses the obesity epidemic and its health consequences by fostering preventative efforts at individual, community, and public health levels.

Common Threads’ approach focuses on practical cooking skills, affordable healthy food access, and sourcing local ingredients to support the area’s economy. This comprehensive strategy aims to create lasting impact and equip participants with the knowledge and tools to build healthier lives, ultimately working to reduce health disparities in underserved communities.
