Rebekah Walker, PhD, is addressing health disparities in minority groups by focusing on the intersection of social determinants of health and chronic disease management. As an associate professor and chief of the Division of Population Health at the University at Buffalo, she leads research aimed at reducing cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among African Americans facing food insecurity.
Walker’s work includes a clinical trial funded by a $3.28 million grant from the National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities, which evaluates the effectiveness of structured financial incentives in lowering CVD risk. This intervention combines income supplementation, financial incentives for purchasing healthy food, and education on reducing CVD risk.
Walker’s research emphasizes the importance of addressing underlying poverty and integrating social and medical care to improve health outcomes. Additionally, her work involves developing community-based interventions that incorporate social determinants of health to improve outcomes for adults with chronic diseases.
