Southern Arkansas University

Southern Arkansas University (SAU) has announced an additional $500,000 grant aimed at tackling health disparities among high-risk groups, including racial and ethnic minorities and rural communities in southwest Arkansas. This initiative, titled “Building a Diverse Workforce to Advance Health Equity,” is funded by the Office of Health Equity of the Arkansas Department of Health in collaboration with the Centers for Disease Control. The grant was originally set to conclude in May 2024 but has been extended to May 2025, allowing the university and its partners more time to fulfill their objectives.

The initiative includes a comprehensive population health survey that will involve 3,000 adults across 17 counties in southwest Arkansas. This survey aims to provide an in-depth understanding of the social factors contributing to health disparities in the region. The partnership includes notable institutions such as the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences and the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, which will collaborate to advance the goals of this important project.

The added funding provides an essential opportunity for SAU to further its work in improving health equity among vulnerable populations.
