The University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) has partnered with One Stop Cancer Shop to combat health disparities in cancer outcomes among minority populations. This initiative aims to provide free cancer screenings to communities at higher risk of cancer-related deaths in Omaha, Nebraska.
The program kicked off with a screening event at Mount Calvary Community Church in North Omaha, offering tests for breast, lung, colorectal, and prostate cancer. These cancers are among the most common and deadly, particularly in minority communities.
Reverend Karen Saunders, one of the event organizers, emphasized the importance of accessibility. “We’re highlighting the African American community or people of color, but anyone can come in if there is a need or you think that there’s a reason for screening,” she stated. Saunders, motivated by her family’s history with breast cancer, sees the initiative as crucial for early detection.
The initiative comes in response to alarming statistics. In 2022, cancer claimed nearly 35,000 lives in Nebraska, making it the state’s second-leading cause of death. Many of these deaths, according to medical professionals, were potentially preventable with early detection and treatment.
Arlivia Dunson, another organizer, expressed enthusiasm about the community’s response. “This is a blessing. And just to see all the people who have come to help and are willing to help, and everybody is volunteering, and we’re just wanting to get it out there,” she said.
The organizers plan to expand their reach with another screening event scheduled for October 26th at the Indian Health Community Center in South Omaha. This expansion demonstrates their commitment to serving diverse communities across the city.
By bringing these vital health services directly to underserved areas, UNMC and One Stop Cancer Shop are taking a proactive step towards reducing cancer disparities and improving health outcomes for all Nebraskans.
