The University of North Carolina (UNC) at Chapel Hill has launched an initiative to address the lack of diversity in clinical trials. This effort, led by the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, aims to ensure that clinical trials better represent the diverse population of the United States.

The initiative focuses on increasing participation from underrepresented groups, including African Americans, Hispanics, and Native Americans, who have historically been excluded from many clinical studies.

The initiative includes several strategies to achieve its goals. One key approach is community engagement, where the team works directly with local communities to build trust and awareness about the importance of clinical trials. This involves partnering with community leaders and organizations to disseminate information and encourage participation. Additionally, the initiative seeks to address logistical barriers that may prevent individuals from participating in clinical trials, such as transportation and financial constraints.

The initiative also includes training for researchers to help them understand and address the unique needs and concerns of diverse populations. By fostering a more inclusive approach to clinical trials, UNC hopes to improve health outcomes and reduce disparities in medical research.
